Gavin believes tough action on crime is one of the key priorities in Edinburgh Southern. The Scottish Conservatives successfully ensured that Scotland got 1,000 extra police officers. This has led to a reduction in overall crime levels. However, a new law from the SNP Government (supported by the Liberal Democrats) puts our residents at risk.

The new law, which recently came into force, means that there is a presumption against jail sentences of under three months. Someone who might have gotten two months in jail last year for a violent assault will only get community service this year.

Conservatives will reverse this absurd new law and:

• Take a zero tolerance approach to crime by punishing all offences

• End automatic early release to re-introduce honesty in sentencing - 4 years should mean 4 years, 10 years should mean 10 years and in some cases life should mean life

• Adopt a zero tolerance approach to drugs on our streets and in prisons

• Address overcrowding by building more prisons, not by jailing fewer criminals

Scottish Conservatives are committed to ensuring we keep the 1,000 extra police officers. A visible presence of police on our streets will help to deter and detect crime.
