Campaigns - Action on Crime

crimepetition

Gavin believes tough action on crime is one of the key priorities in Edinburgh South. He is campaigning vigorously for the Conservative action points.

Conservatives will:

  • Take a zero tolerance approach to crime by punishing offences, however small
  • Fund 1,500 extra police officers for Scotland’s communities
  • End automatic early release to re-introduce honesty in sentencing - 4 years should mean 4 years, 10 years should mean 10 years and in some cases life should mean life
  • Adopt a zero tolerance approach to drugs on our streets and in prisons
  • Address overcrowding by building more prisons, not by jailing fewer criminals

Crime and the fear of crime affect everyone. Lawlessness permanently disfigures too many of Scotland’s communities. It is staggering that every day for the next 100 days, well over a thousand crimes will be committed. It has to stop.

We will fund an increase in police numbers of at least 1,500. A visible presence of police on our streets will help to deter and detect crime. Those police will take a zero-tolerance approach to all crimes, modelled on the New York Broken Windows policy, which did so much towards the dramatic reductions in crime in that city.

Gavin said recently: -

"I will stand up for the law-abiding majority, and the Conservatives will redress the balance in their favour. I utterly reject the politically correct-consensus which has proven to be far too soft on crime. Under the Conservatives, the rights of the victim will come far ahead of the rights of criminals."
