News - GAVIN STANDS UP FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
The Scottish Parliament recently held a 'Business in the Parliament' day where businesspeople were invited to give their views to the Scottish Executive. Gavin Brown, who actually runs his own business, took time out to attend. Gavin said: - "From Fairmilehead to Newington, and Merchiston to Alnwickhill, local businesses form an important part of the community. They all face ever-increasing daily challenges, so it is crucial that their voices are heard." The heavy tax burden faced by local businesses is one issue which affects most business owners. Of particular concern is the fact that Scottish businesses pay a 12% higher business rate that their English counterparts, putting them at a competitive disadvantage. Commenting, Gavin said: - "During the Question Time segment in the Parliament, I asked the Labour Finance Minister, Andy Kerr, why business rates in Scotland were higher than business rates down South. Sadly, his answer left a lot to be desired - he wasn't convinced that a tax cut would help Scottish businesses!" The Scottish Conservatives would reduce business rates in Scotland, to ease the burden on businesses and put them on a level playing field with their counterparts down South. |
