News - COUNCIL TAX - PENSIONERS LOSE OUT

This year’s Budget withdrew the £200 supplementary payment made to pensioners, for assisting them with the payment of their council tax bills.

This has affirmed the belief held by the Conservatives at the time that the £200 payment was introduced (shortly before the last General Election), that this concession was nothing more than an election gimmick brought in by Gordon Brown.

Gavin Brown has commented that: -

“The Scottish Parliament has powers to amend Council Tax legislation to allow for more permanent council tax relief for pensioners. This power should be exercised without undue delay in light of the £200 withdrawal.”
