Under David Cameron’s leadership we are working hard to develop policies that are environmentally sound. Getting this right is a critical issue that faces all countries, all parties and individuals.

Our more detailed policies on environmental issues are due to be unveiled as the year progresses. However, there are many things we can do each day as individuals to play our part. A recent book entitled ‘Go Make a Difference’ (published by Think Books) lists over 500 simple things we can do.

We list a few of these below and will put a new one on this site each day over the next month – look at the quote of the day section.

  • Hot drinks – boil only the amount of water required each time. Apparently if everyone did this for one day, we would save enough energy to power all the UK street lamps for a night.

  • Computers – always turn them off when they are not being used. Enormous amounts of energy are wasted nationwide every day by people not doing this – on top of that it results in higher electricity bills.

  • Recycle glass bottles – doing this once could save enough energy to run a tv set for 90 minutes. In addition, it also saves oil, ash, sand and limestone.
