News - 50% COUNCIL TAX DISCOUNT FOR PENSIONERS
The Scottish Conservatives recently unveiled a policy of giving every pensioner household a 50% discount on their council tax. This would be funded centrally, on top of any existing discount the houshold recieved and would not be means tested. The policy would mean that a band D council tax bill for a household with 2 or more pensioners in Edinburgh would be slashed from £1,152 a year, to £576 a year. A single pensioner band D household would see their bill slashed from £864 to £432 a year. Commenting, Gavin said: - “As I knock on doors across South Edinburgh I am told frequently by residents that the Council Tax is far too high. Council tax has risen by 30% in Edinburgh since 1999 and these higher bills have hit everyone hard. It is particularly tough, though, for people who have to get by on retirement incomes. The 50% discount plan for pensioner households will significantly reduce the burden. I believe this policy will be of real benefit to pensioners in Edinburgh.” |
