News - Visit to Redhall Walled Garden

Redhall Gardens

Gavin spent the morning on a visit to the wonderful Redhall Walled Garden. At the end of the tour he sat down for tea with the volunteers and had a fascinating discussion with them.

Redhall Walled Garden is a very unusual 18th century walled garden on the banks of the Water of Leith. It is managed by SAMH and is run on organic principles.

This is an exciting and innovative community garden. It is primarily a training garden with many unusual features - an Iron Age roundhouse, bog garden, ponds, sunken garden, and lots more. Most importantly it is an active working garden managed collaboratively by a team of 50 people recovering from the challenges of mental health problems. There is a strong belief in the therapeutic benefits of working on the land.

Gavin said: -

"I was totally blown away by the work that goes on here and was really moved during the discussions. I would certainly recommend a visit to Redhall Walled Garden and intend to come back for the open day."
